Aura

I served as a strategist and senior writer on the immersive themed location project, a collaboration between Wētā Workshop, China Duty Free Group (CDF), and Dafeng. As a senior leader within the creative team, I contributed to the development of the concept, 'The Forest at the Edge of the Sky.' I wrote the script defining the visitor experience and the animated story showcased on a 29-meter interactive LED screen turned waterfall. The project received a First Place for Themed Entertainment at the Blooloop Innovation Awards, the Trinity Award for Non-Airport Retailer of the Year, and Best Commercial Complex of the Year at the GBE HOPSCA Awards. It also won Bronze at the Best Awards.

Creative Concept

The vision was to create a shopping experience that would serve as an entertainment destination in its own right, enticing customers into the mall. From a conceptual perspective, The Forest at the Edge of the Sky celebrates the natural environment of Hainan and transforms it into a fantastical, immersive, and interactive world within the mall's atrium. A series of key set pieces tell the story:

A 29m interactive LED screen invites guests to engage in various ways, telling an animated story on the hour, displaying a digital waterfall, revealing creatures hiding in visitors’ shadows, and integrating visitors into an upside-down, digital waterfall.

The 25m Tree of Light boasts 5,000 programmable orbs which respond to guests passing by with a gentle shimmer that symbolises connectedness. Each orb contributes to the slow, dreamy movement of the tree as a whole. Every hour, The Tree of Light takes centre stage in a breathtaking light show.

The 40m long escalator is more than just a mode of travel; visitors are treated to a journey through light and sound within the trunk of a gigantic tree.
